The Associate Provost for Research and Dean of Libraries (APRL) reports to the Provost and directly assists and advises the Provost in carrying out responsibilities relative to research and libraries. Specifically, the APRL facilitates and manages research capacity of faculty and staff at APU and serves as the Dean of the Libraries. Additionally, the APRL works collaboratively with faculty governance councils and key personnel in schools/colleges which are focused on advancing the research quality and output which helps retain APUís R2 status. This position closely collaborates with Deans, Chairs, faculty, and other academic leaders to ensure faculty thrive as scholars and are resourced by the libraries. The position also has responsibility for collaborating with the Senior Associate Provost of Operations and Strategic Planning on actualizing the research and libraries portion of the university strategic plan.
Cultivate a campus culture that supports, honors, and rewards the scholarly contributions of a diverse faculty
This position oversees all aspects of the University Libraries, including personnel and facilities
Guide faculty to programs and resources for expanding APUís impact in the scholarly community
Creates an environment that facilitates research and scholarly activity with an understanding of innovative and traditional methods of information dissemination
Ensure that faculty and students are provided with the research/library tools needed to carry out high quality research
Partner with faculty governance to create equitable rewards for high scholarly producing faculty
Facilitates the continuing transformation of the University Libraries into a knowledge commons that integrates diverse resources, seeks new opportunities, engages with the community, collaborates with university units, supports student success and retention, and sustains a vibrant research and learning community
Monitors the research output of APU and partner with the relevant offices to make sure that internal and external constituencies are aware of the scholarly impact of APUís faculty
Works with library and department heads, as well as external sources, to identify, evaluate and implement programs that improve services and facilities, enhance the quality of resources and increase operational efficiency within the libraries
Fosters professionalism, diversity and a positive work/learning environment in the University Libraries
Engages in problem-solving with academic leaders and faculty to manage conflict and reduce potential liability
Reviews and propose systems needed to provide scholarly tools and research platforms to help modernize APUís research environment
Other duties may be assigned to this position on a regular or occasional basis to respond to the needs of the university
Doctoral Degree required
Minimum of 5-7 years of higher education administration experience.
MLS or MLIS degree preferred
The successful candidate will be an experienced academic leader who has held progressively responsible administrative roles in an academic setting. They will have demonstrated a record of ethical, fair, and innovative leadership, with excellent interpersonal, problem solving, and communication skills, as well as a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion and respect for shared governance. Required credentials are an earned terminal degree in the candidateís field, with a strong record of scholarship and leadership experience that demonstrates understanding of a university library system. The successful candidate demonstrates a vibrant Christian faith compatible with the mission of Azusa Pacific University.
