Lead Software Engineer - Backend

Here at Leica, we engineer and manufacture Digital pathology scanners, which are a high precision and automated electro-mechanical instrument for high resolution scan of pathological samples.

The Lead Backend Software Engineer contributes to the success of the team by providing technical guidance and mentorship to the software organization, collaborating with other groups, to ensure quality products. They use their experience in database and data services to pick the best tools and technologies to ensure the team and product success. They will work with the DevOps team to automate development and production release cycles. They actively seek out and contribute to industry standard methodologies and deploy them in their daily tasking. They are dedicated to constant evolution and continuous improvement and are eager to learn knew topics and participate in thorough debates to chart the future course. Ultimately responsible for the design, troubleshooting, documentation, deployment, and performance of multiple data driven solutions integral to multiple commercial products.

Major Responsibilities

  • Lead all aspects of and data projects
  • Implement and maintain data services and storage
  • Maintain detailed ERD and System diagrams
  • Interact with Engineering and other development leaders
  • Lead engineering teams on new development efforts
  • Develop plans for future improvements
  • Write design specifications, interface descriptions, and other documents
  • Develop unit tests
  • Evaluate and recommend tools, technologies, and process improvements
  • Prioritize sustainment issues
  • Mentor team members
  • Analyze the technical system and business models
  • Provide constructive reviews and feedback for team members
  • Set personal goals on a weekly, monthly, and yearly

Required Education, Skills & Experience

  • Bachelors / Masters (preferred) degree in Computer Science, Database, related STEM fields, or equivalent experience (6+ years with Master's Degree, 10+ years in related roles if no applicable degree)
  • 8 + years of experience in the following:
  • Software Engineering, workflow management and automation
  • Programming script languages like Python, PHP, TypeScript, C/C++, C, ASP.Net, Java
  • 4+ years demonstrated ability in the following:
  • Web development technologies like JavaScript, HTML, and CSS
  • Full stack software product development
  • Database systems like MySQL, MS SQL, Oracle, MongoDB
  • Database security like PCI, PII, SOC
  • Experience within the following:
  • Product authentication and authorization principals and procedures
  • A variety of risk analysis techniques like FMEA
  • Creating and updating design documentation (DHF/ DMR)
  • Design change in within a quality management system
  • Agile methodologies and principles. Preferably Scrum/Kanban
  • Writing requirements documents and design specifications

Desired Skills/Experience:

  • Experience with automated build, integrations, and deployments
  • Experience Leading multi-disciplinary teams
  • Experience in medical product development environment (FDA, ISO) with exposure to design control regulations
  • Experience with Verification and Validation methods for medical device development.
