Fayetteville State University (FSU) is seeking to hire its next Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. FSU is a public, comprehensive Historically Black University, located in Fayetteville, North Carolina. FSU is the second oldest public university in North Carolina and is the regional university of choice for students from rural, military, and other diverse backgrounds. 


Institution
What began in 1867 as a one-building school established by black community leaders to educate black children in Fayetteville, has grown into a campus of 156 acres serving over 6,700 students. Fayetteville State University offers robust and innovative degree programs rooted in the liberal arts tradition. Position
The provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs serves as chief academic officer of the Division of Academic Affairs and serves on the chancellor’s cabinet. The provost administers and provides overall leadership for academic undergraduate and graduate degree programs, university college/general education, teacher licensure, distance education and extended learning, online programs, military education, and summer school. The provost also oversees current and new academic programs, as well as academic support services including the library, enrollment management, financial aid, registrar, institutional effectiveness and assessment, institutional research, international education, Title III, sponsored programs and research, university testing, pre-college and outreach programs, and special initiatives and centers. 


Other duties include:



  • Lead and oversee the long-term and short-term strategic planning and annual reporting processes that involve the division and units;

  • Ensure current and up-to-date academic calendars, catalogs, class schedules, and course descriptions for all academic degree programs, as well as non- degree and certificate programs;

  • Work with deans, chairpersons, and faculty to identify and achieve strategic goals and to establish a common academic vision that embraces the division’s and university’s commitment to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service;

  • Ensure effective faculty and staff development opportunities and programs;

  • Participate in committees and leadership teams on and off campus;

  • Manage budgets and allocates resources;

  • Provide oversight for faculty recruitment, appointment, reappointment, tenure, promotion, and post-tenure review; and promote faculty, administrators, and staff;

  • Develops and ensure adherence to policies and procedures;

  • Produces relevant reports required by FSU, UNC System Office, government agencies, and other educational partners as required;

  • Develops strategic partnerships with internal and external constituencies to advance the goals of Academic Affairs; and

  • Spearheads efforts to identify new sources of funding for departments and units within Academic Affairs.


Qualifications
FSU seeks a collaborative, transparent, innovative, and visionary leader with a record of effective leadership in higher education administrative positions. Dedication to preserving and advancing FSU’s HBCU legacy, mission, and culture is essential. An earned doctorate in a relevant field of study from an accredited university is preferred; other terminal degrees will be considered.


Other qualifications include:



  • Tenure or eligibility for a tenure-track faculty position;

  • Teaching experience in an established program at the university level, including scholarship/research/artistic accomplishments and service that merit appointment as a full professor;

  • A strong commitment to academic excellence and the improvement of student learning and diversity in all aspects of college life;

  • Evidence of effective program development and budget management;

  • Experience with grant writing and maximizing grant opportunities;

  • Evidence of excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills;

  • High levels of integrity and commitment to the mission of FSU and the philosophical underpinnings of the programs within Academic Affairs;

  • Demonstrated success in both student and faculty/staff recruitment and retention;

  • The capacity to work collaboratively with internal and external constituencies and be an effective spokesperson for the academic community;

  • A working knowledge of regional, national, international, and departmental accreditation processes to include the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS);

  • Ability to enhance and increase participation in research opportunities; and 

  • A record of successful work with diverse populations of students and professional educators.
