Student Tips for Staying Cool in Their Dorms

Student Tips for Staying Cool in Their Dorms
Posted By: Brooke Chaplan on July 28, 2022

Dorm living is an exciting time, and turning your dormitory into a comfortable home is essential for making the most out of your college experience. However, many dormitories are older or do not provide central AC for individual rooms. Beating the heat while trying to study can be a daunting task. Thankfully, there are options to keep your dorm cool and comfortable during the hottest months.

Keep It Dark

Shut your windows, draw those shades, and turn off any unneeded lights. Incandescent light bulbs generate the most heat, while CFL and LED lights generate the least amount of heat. Consider using blackout curtains that will stop the sun’s rays entirely. If you need to switch on a light, switch on a lamp instead of overhead light and make sure to turn it back off when not in use.

Get a Fan

This tip may seem like common sense, but you can engineer a fan even further to keep cool. Frozen water bottles or damp towels in front of the fan’s stream will blow that cold air your way. Sitting in front of a fan with a wet towel draped around your neck will increase the relief as well. If the corridor leading to your room is cooler, open your door and place the fan in the doorway to increase airflow and cool your room down.

Get an Portable Air Conditioner

Since many dorms do not provide air conditioning or air conditioner repair, a portable AC may be the answer to keeping you cool during the summer months. These air conditioners are quiet, lightweight, and easy to move from place to place. An exhaust pipe placed in the window is the only installation needed. Furthermore, thanks to their small size, they can be tucked into a corner to preserve precious floor space.

To further minimize costs, consider borrowing a broken AC from a friend or family member. An air conditioning repair expert will be able to sort out minor problems to get it running again. Depending on the severity of the damage, repairs may be more affordable than a replacement unit.

Keep Hydrated

Your body sweats to regulate the internal temperature and keep you cool. Drinking water on a regular basis will prevent dehydration and naturally keep your body cooler. Lemon juice will help replace the electrolytes lost from sweating. You can also eat cucumbers, watermelon, and citrus fruits to stay hydrated.

Many alternatives to keep cool exist and can fit into anyone’s budget, dormitory rules, or space constraints. Utilizing the above tips will ensure your comfort all year long. Do not be afraid to ask your neighbors what they do to keep cool. You may be surprised at what other ingenious solutions they have implemented.
