Steps to Take for Starting a Career in the Medicare Marketplace

Steps to Take for Starting a Career in the Medicare Marketplace
Posted By: Dixie Somers on September 29, 2021

Starting a career in the medicare marketplace can be intimidating. There are so many aspects to consider, and you want to make sure that you're on track for success before diving in head-first. Here are five steps to take when starting your career as an insurance agent or advisor with the medicare marketplace.

Take the Certification Exam

This may seem like an obvious step, but it's important to make sure that you are fully certified before beginning your career as a medicare agent. The requirements vary by state, so check with your local insurance board for guidance on becoming properly licensed. Once you have passed the exam and received certification, display this information prominently on your website or information packet.

Decide if Becoming an Insurance Agent or Advisor Is Right for You

Only choose to pursue this career path if it genuinely interests and excites you. It will be difficult enough without dragging yourself down with a job that doesn't suit your skills. Do some research on what the average day looks like, how long training typically takes, etc., so you can decide what will be best for your lifestyle and career goals. The path to becoming an insurance agent is different than that of a broker, so make sure you understand the difference between these two roles before choosing one over the other.

Set Up Your Business

You will need to decide if you're starting your agency or working through an existing company. If you plan on starting a new agency, you must have all of the necessary licenses and certifications before beginning operations.

You can either apply for these yourself or hire someone else who specializes in this aspect of opening a business. If you decide to work through an existing company, then make sure that you're fully trained and ready to go before signing on as their employee. Applications, like back office healthcare operations software, can help you keep organized. Look into software like this to make sure you offer the best service for your clients.

Get Your Website Up and Running

It will be challenging to attract new customers if you don't have a site to visit. Try out different templates, layouts, and plugins until you find something that works well with the information you plan to share. Make sure there's an easy way for visitors to sign up for your email newsletter if you want to notify them when you have new information or special offers available.

Market Yourself

Once you have your website up and running, it's time to let people know that you exist! You can start by reaching out to family members, friends, local businesses owners, etc., asking if they'd be willing to share a link on their site or social media. Next, begin connecting with other insurance agents in the area to see if they'd be interested in working with you on deals or teaming up for seminars/events. Ensure that your email signature includes a link back to your site, so people can quickly learn more about what you have to offer.

Starting a new career can be exciting and daunting. If you are breaking into the insurance business, use the tips above.
