The Do's and Don'ts of Buying a Good Car

The Do
Posted By: Kara Masterson on September 23, 2021

Buying a new car can be an exciting experience, no matter if it’s your first time or the hundredth time you’ve done it. However, you may end up spending too much money or getting a car that doesn't fit your needs if you do not take the proper steps. The following is a list of dos and don'ts of buying a good car.

Do's

Research the Car You Want

One of the keys to ensuring that you get the car that is right for you is to do your research.
Consider why you need a car in the first place, and also how having the car is going to impact your life; how you plan to pay for it, where it’s going to be parked when not in use, how you plan to maintain it and general upkeep. You might have an idea of what you want in your head, but you should make sure to compare it to both what you need and what you can afford. This can help limit your expectations and narrow down the many options you can come across while looking at what’s on the market. For example, you may want a Mazda cx30, but you should make sure you can afford to buy it.

Once you have an idea of what you’re going to look for, it’s best to read up as much as you can on the kind of car you’re going to look at. Read reviews, reports, and perhaps even research the dealers you’re thinking of buying from.

Communicate With the Insurance Agent

How much you pay for car insurance will be determined by the type of car you buy. That is why you need to speak to an insurance agent before you finalize any sort of purchase. You want to make sure that your new car isn't going to cause you to spend too much on auto insurance.

In fact, generally speaking to your insurance agent before making any sort of insurance-related decisions is a good idea. They can help you navigate what you’ll need, and also possibly inform you about things related to your decision you may not have been aware of. Such as policies or fees a purchase like a new car can come with.

Get Pre-Approved

It is a good idea to have your pre-approval letter in hand before you make a trip to the dealer. This will ensure that you stay within your budget and help you negotiate with the dealer. This is something that you don’t absolutely have to have when buying a car, but it can definitely help.

Don'ts

Look for a Car Without Checking Your Credit

Your credit score will be checked prior to getting a loan, which most people need to buy a car. That is why you don't want to go car shopping without checking your credit score. A good score not only helps you get a loan, but it also helps you get better interest rates on your loan. If you have a low credit score, then you should spend a few months working on it before you buy a car.

Look for One Dealer

You shouldn't just be good with the first dealer that you talk to. Shopping around makes it easier for you to find what you are looking for. It also helps you save money.

Keep in mind that you don't have to drive around looking for dealers. You can just look online for dealers and compare the rates.

Taking the proper steps before you buy a car will make it easier for you to get what you need. You should do the proper research, communicate with your insurance agent and get pre-approved before you buy your car. You will also need to check your credit score and look for more than one dealer.
