How to Set Up Your Apartment Internet When Sharing With Roommates

How to Set Up Your Apartment Internet When Sharing With Roommates
Posted By: Hannah Whittenly on July 07, 2021

In the rowing digital world of today, everyone needs to constantly remain connected to a network, both at home and at work. Previously people had to put up with cables running all over their homes to gain access to the internet. However, with technological advancement, you can now invest in a wireless network connection. Most internet service providers today are offering their clients access to modems that also act as routers. Instead of a modem, you can as well go for a router. Before setting up a wireless connection in your apartment, you need to make sure your roommates’ devices have wireless capabilities. Those without may have to buy a wireless card. Here are a few things you need to have in mind when setting up the wireless connection.

The Community

You need to think about the layout of your apartment. You should set up the router in a strategic location to ensure every room is able to receive the signal sufficiently. In most cases, this may involve a little cabling from the wall to the modem. Setting up the router in a central location can help prevent any form of disagreements related to the internet between you and your roommates. It is also best to go for an unlimited internet connection to prevent any inconveniences.

Setting Up the Hardware

When setting up the hardware, you may have to inform your roommates to unplug every connected device from the modem.

Once you have disconnected everything, it is recommended to disconnect the modem for its power source. A wireless router usually comes with a short cable. Plug one end of the cable onto the signal out port on your modem and the other end onto the signal in the port of your router. Once you secure the connection, power on the modem and give it at least 30 seconds to connect to the internet before powering the wireless router. Once the light indicating LAN comes on you, you have to begin programming your network system.

Security

Being a shared internet connection, you need to set up an elaborate security network. Start by connecting the router to your computer through a port at the back of the router. This leads to a connection to an unsecured network named after the manufacturer. This connection will definitely work, but it will leave you vulnerable to anyone looking to connect to your network and possibly reduce your internet speeds. Use the access codes that come with the router to change the name of the router and creator a password for the administrator. When setting up the network password, choose characters that your roommates can easily remember. You can keep the administrator’s password to yourself. Save the settings and unplug the computer from your router.
Once your network connection is fully set up, it is best to discuss with your roommate and share all the relevant information, including the billing and how you will share the costs.
