Assistant Director of Athletics Communications


Job Description:

Reporting to the Director of Athletics and Director of Athletic Communications has the primary responsibility for the promotion and publicity of McDaniel's 24 intercollegiate athletics teams, coaches, and staff.  This role will also develop and execute a comprehensive social media strategy for the department in close consultation with the Director of Athletics Communications, Director of Athletics, and College's Social Media Marketing Manager. Be skilled in the graphic arts, website design and maintenance, video production and editing, and will be proficient providing statistics for various sports. The candidate will serve as the primary contact for numerous teams.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Plan, organize and conduct all sports information and communications activity for varsity athletics contests as assigned. Serve as primary contact for assigned sports.
  • Take a lead role, working closely with the Director of Athletics Communications, the college's Social Media Manager, and athletics staff in the management of the athletics department social media accounts, creating and publish unique and engaging content regularly across all platforms (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube).
  • Assist in management of athletics website to assure updated information appears in a timely fashion including schedules, rosters, photos, team and individual records, award winners and other relevant facts as needed. 
  • Create compelling visual storytelling to engage current and future student-athletes through the use of text, photos, and/or video.
  • Identify, research, and write nominations for qualified student-athletes for various honors, awards, and post season recognition.
  • Assure all athletics publications are properly edited and published on an appropriate timetable.
  • Adhere to all brand and editorial standards established by the Office of Communications and Marketing and Athletics Communications Office. Assist in management of brand standards with coaches and other staff members.
  • Manage and oversee game-day and student workers as needed.
  • Attend all CoSida, NCAA, Centennial Conference, and departmental meetings, as warranted.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Information Security Role: Data User

  • Follow the policies and procedures established by the appropriate Data Stewards.
  • Comply with federal and state laws and regulations as well as College policies, procedures, and standards associated with the College computing resources and institutional data used.
  • Use institutional data only as required for the conduct of college business within the scope of employment.
  • Implement safeguards prescribed by appropriate Data Stewards for Limited Access and Restricted Data.
  • Ensure the appropriateness, accuracy, and timeliness of institutional data used for the conduct of college business.
  • Report any unauthorized access, data misuse, or data quality issues to the appropriate Data Steward for remediation.
  • Accept and complete the confidentiality statement yearly if access includes Restricted data.
  • Report any suspected data breach to the CIO and the IT Help Desk as soon as possible.


Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree required, Master's preferred in journalism, communications, English, or related discipline highly desired.
  • Relatable experience in athletics communications in higher education. 
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks under pressure and be highly adaptable to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Ability to maintain composure, effectiveness, and focus when facing difficult challenges; demonstrating sound judgment and discretion in a potentially stressful environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills required, including effective in-person communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Previous knowledge of statistical rules for volleyball and lacrosse strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of Stat Crew, PrestoStats and NCAA Live Stats strongly preferred.
  • Experience with PrestoSports and/or SIDEARM web content editor preferred.
  • Experience in video editing software, specifically Adobe Premiere Pro, strongly preferred.
  • A self-motivated worker, able to work well independently, energetically, creatively, and under strict deadlines.
  • Ability and interest in sports and a willingness to effectively work with other college departments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with the media, employees, coaching staff, student-athletes, vendors, alumni, and public.
  • Ability to travel, work effectively and efficiently in a flexible work week schedule (including evenings and weekends), and work overtime in busy periods during the academic year.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with two or less points.

Working Conditions:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is routinely working in a normal office environment with minimal exposure to adverse conditions. During fall and spring sports, the employee will be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal.    

Physical Abilities:

The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:

  • Sitting for long periods of time.
  • Some bending and stooping when working with files. 
  • Limited lifting involved but not more than 10 pounds at a time.
